Teachers working in schools, distributed learning centres, central office positions and administrative designations have become increasingly concerned about the intensification of their workloads.
The Joint C2 Committees on Teachers’ Workload,* mandated by the Assurances for Students Act, provides an opportunity to identify teachers’ tasks and determine what can be eliminated or modified to reduce teacher workload and improve teacher efficacy.
The work of C2 committees has already begun. Locals have identified teachers to serve as leaders for local C2 committees. In addition, leaders, local presidents, school board chairs and superintendents will attend training sessions on June 19, in Edmonton, June 21, in Grande Prairie, and June 25, in Calgary. The training sessions, a joint venture between the ATA, the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) and the College of Alberta School Superintendents (CASS), will focus on the development of an operational framework for local C2 committees.
The key contacts will hone their skills at workshops offered at this year’s ATA Summer Conference. By September, each C2 committee will be fully operational and ready to review, identify and consider what tasks may be eliminated or modified.
Support your local C2 committee
Teachers may be asked to provide feedback through a survey or a focus group in the fall of 2013. This input will be valuable when the committee writes its report (due October 31, 2013) and in making a difference to your own professional conditions of practice and those of your colleagues. (The October 31 report is an initial report that sets out the plan of action and identifies tasks that can be eliminated or modified.)
* The C2 committee derives its name from part C and clause 2 of the framework that refers to teacher workload and formation of a joint committee between school jurisdictions and bargaining units.
